At the end of which term, the cost of repatriating each labourer, to their Chinese Port of embarkation,
will be provided by Government.
Nine hours constitutes a day's work on the transit
lines, below-ground, and eight hours, if actually employed at the coal-face.
Wages offered per day 45 cents for the first two
years, and an increase during the third year, of
five and ten cents per day, according to skill, the labourer paying for his own food out of this.
A monthly bonus of one dollar ($1) is paid to each labourer (over and abore his wages) who has put în an attendance of twenty-four days at work during
each month. Two days being allowed the labourer to qualify for the bonus in case of any possible sickness, or slight incapacity, as the average number of working days for each month at the Collieries, is about twenty-six.
(e) Except in the case of emergency, such as fire, or
flood, the labourer need not work more than twenty-
six days during any one month, nor upon the usual Chinese feast days, of which five are recognised,
in addition to two days at Chinese New Year.
(iv) Suitable house accommodation, medical attendance
and treatment are supplied free of charge. The Goverment maintains a small hospital and dispensary
at the Mines.
(v)
If at any time during his contract, or within 14
days of the expiration of it, the labourer is unfit for labour, his return passage to the port of
embarkation in China is paid.
(vi) On the normal expiration of his contract free
